Garbage
Garbage is collected only in the lunchrooms or coffee stations. Garbage bins are lined and are emptied daily by the night cleaning staff.
Simultaneously with the implementation of the expanded recycling program, we have discontinued the individual garbage bins at each desk. At each desk, we will now only have a paper recycling bin.
The reason for this change is threefold. First, to encourage recycling. If people have the ability to throw things away in a garbage bin at their desk, they are less likely to walk over to the lunchroom/kitchen to use the recycling bins. Second, to reduce cost. The cleaners will now empty the paper bins at each desk location, instead of garbage. Collecting both at each desk will increase the amount of work for the cleaners, and thus cost. Third, to reduce the use of plastic bags. Every garbage bin has a plastic liner that is replaced daily. Having garbage bins at each desk would waste a lot of plastic bags.
