Recycling

900 West Hastings offers an enhanced recycling program that, in addition to the tradional recycling of paper, cardboard, and glass, metals and plastics, now also includes organics, electronics, batteries and soft plastic. Paper towels from washrooms are also recycled.

With this participation of all building occupants, the expanded recycling program will allow us to achieve a 90% diversion rate, whereby 90% of all waste materials are recycled.

Recycling materials

The following materials are separated at source and recycled or disposed separately.

Mixed Paper:All 'clean' paper products, including copy paper, letterhead, envelopes, newspapers, magazines, and cardboard. Napkins and paper based food wrappers are not accepted in these paper bins, but these items can be placed in the Organics bin. Office paper is collected at each desk with the standard blue desk size bins, and in larger bins in the copy rooms. The paper bins are emptied daily by the night cleaning staff.
Cardboard:All cardboard materials are accepted. Cardboard boxes are to be flattened and to be left in the copier room or such other space specified. Cardboard will be collected daily by our night cleaners. If there is a lot of cardboard on one particular day, please contact us and we will arrange for our day cleaner to pick up.
Mixed Containers:All glass and plastic bottles and pop cans. Plastics containers with numbers from 1 to 7 are acceptable (see symbols at the bottom of your container or lid) Mixed containers are collected in the appropriate bin located in each lunchroom or kitchen.
Electronics:Computer monitors, computers, scanners, printers, fax machines, copiers, laptop computers, cell phones, answering machines, cameras, televisions, audio and video equipment are all accepted. Electronics can be placed on the shelves in the recycling room on the ground floor. This room is located in the service corridor behind the elevators. To obtain access, please contact our office so that we can program your access card to open the room to the recycling room. If you need assistance in removing these items, please contact us.
Organics:All food scraps, fruit, vegetables, coffee grounds and compostable materials. Paper towels, napkins, paper-based food wrappers and containers, pizza boxes and waxed cardboard are also accepted. Organics are collected in the designated bins in the lunchrooms. These bins are lined with compostable liners, and emptied daily by our night cleaners.
Soft plastics:Plastic bags, grocery bags, bubble wrap, foam wrap, plastic wrap, garbage bags, and similar soft plastics. Please ensure the soft plastics are clean (i.e. no garbage inside the bags). Soft plastics are collected in the lunchrooms and emptied by our night cleaners as needed.
Batteries:Batteries of all types, including household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D-cell, 9V, etc) as well as batteries from electronics (cell phones, cameras). Batteries (14V-18V) from power tools are also accepted. Batteries can be placed in the separate bin in the recycling room on the ground floor.
Paper Towels:Paper towels from hand drying only. The washrooms are equipped with receptacles for clean paper towels, and have a separate container under the counters for other garbage. Please use the receptacle in the paper dispensing units for clean paper towels only, and place all other items in the garbage cans under the counter. To avoid contaminating the paper recycling stream, it is important that only clean paper towels are recycled.
